Day 6
Today we went to gompers charter middle school. We learned about there evolution from a poor violent school to a normal well funded school. We met the children and ate lunch with them. they were very nice. I think it is great what they did but I think it could still you use some improvement. But overall it was amazing. Before it changed it was a horrible place where people were afraid to go to school. Partly because often people would bring siblings to jump people. also because only honor students were treated well. Also they have student cages and they would lock up students for an hour or so until they calmed down. most of the time more than half of the rooms had no teachers. more than half of the rooms that had teachers in them had substitute teachers that substitute teachers the kids had never met. most children did not even go to school. Congragulations gompers!

day 5
Today we had 2 speekers, one was from the polinski childrens center. This is a center that helps abused children. this is the main one I will be talking about becuase it is my main subject. We learned alot about the main types of child abuse. the most common ones are neglect and verbal abuse. another common type of abuse is physical abuse. Did you know that child abuse is highly related to homlessness. 3 out every 10 homless people were in foster care (most people in foster care are there because they were abused by there parents. we asked the women what we could do to help. she told us we could raise money or bring in any goods. so we decided to take action. we planned to host a concert to benefit the polinski childrens center. It will be at HTM on April 11. It will feature bands among the high tech village such as Mondays alibi, Odens fist, Chad & Michele and Alive on Q. It feels great to really take a stand and change the world. We also did a diaper drive for homless mothers babies and children. this was very successfull. We got lots of babie suppllies. Most people in front of vons were genouros and donated stuff. but some people didnt want to help or were in a hurry. but in the end we got more people who were genouros then people who were not. so I felt good.

day 4
We went to the wild animal park. this time it was to plant trees. we planted trees in areas effected by the fires.
Day 3
Today we learned a lot about GLBT rights, culture and acceptance. I knew almost all of what they said though because my mother is lesbian. Later on we delivered meals to people with aids. We would put the meals by the door and drive away so not to disturb them. It was great knowing that we were helping people by doing something so easy! If you want to get involved click this link.http://www.specialdeliverysandiego.com/links1.html the organization that allowed us to access these people is called special delivery.
Day 2
Today we brought meals, blankets, cards, deoderant, to the homless. it was inspiring when one women started crying of joy becauses of the card i gave her. It had a drawing i made. she was so happy! We also went to a homless shelter. It was great going to a shelter where I saw people recovering from the problems that caused them to become homeless. some people seemed like they had had there self esteem boosted. it was amazing how most people were so much like normal people but had just had hard times with illness , drugs, budget ect. It was not just an ordinary homeless shelter. It was a special time with a hospital, dentist, school, and more built in. It was called st. Vincent Da Pauls (part of father joes).
Day 1
Today we had 2 guest speakers. One was from the horticulture department at the wild animal park. It was interesting to hear about how the fires effected the wild animal park. Could you imagine trying to save all those plants and animals. It was also interesting to learn how important plants are to the wild animal park. Next time I go there I am definitely going to pay more attention to the plants and how hard it must be to plant enough food for all those animals.
The second speaker was an expert on non-profits. To most people it was probably a surprise to hear that now less then 20 percent of non-profits money comes from the government(didnt quite surprise me with so many budget cuts because of the war). The majority of the money comes from wealthy individuals. We also learned a lot of other interesting facts about non profits.
